After some reflection, I’ve decided that “surrealist” isn’t the appropriate word for this book. Viktor’s job is writing obits. But even though he remains in Kiev, his readership is growing much faster in the West than at home. Death and the Penguin is a beautiful and amusing book with a sad sack sense of humor, affection for absurd and ominous situations presented in clear language, and humanity. The chapters are very short. I was able to finish it i This is not a typical Ukranian novel. Kurkov fills it pengiin his lived experience of Kiev and it is such that, by the end of the book, Viktor and his penguin, Misha, feel more normal than the ‘real’ world.
